The course presents and exemplifies an approach to methodology in the social sciences, based on the understanding of practice. A general introduction to the socio-cultural-historical tradition in psychology is given, and contextualized by comparing with forms of action research and discourse analysis. The approach represents a way to reflect on subjective activity as culturally mediated and creative: Standards are implied, reflected, reproduced, and transformed in all practices, and they shape the subjects who participate. Research is basically a way to model and develop those standards. Some recent developments are reviewed, which focus on research as a practice co-producing prototypes, and as implicated in ideological struggles. Participants will be asked to present their research projects and discuss them with the help of the methodological concepts presented.
